The One Minute Manager is a short but very effective read about the three secrets to being a good manager. First we’re introduced to One Minute Goal Setting. A simple list of writing out each of your goals on a single sheet of paper using less than 250 words. Next we’re introduced to the One Minute Praising. This step is important for establishing trust and support between manager and employee. This step also highlights a key theme throughout being that you must be up front with what you’re doing and why you’re doing it, and that you must act immediately. And finally, the third step. One Minute Reprimanding. No one likes or wants to be reprimanded, but as the authors state, “goals begin behaviors, consequences maintain behaviors.” This step is broken down into two equal parts. The first half of the reprimand is to act immediately. Tell them what they did wrong and to be specific. Let them know how you feel about what they did wrong in no uncertain terms. Stop in silence to let them feel how you feel. Then we move to the second half of the reprimand. Shake hands or touch them in a way that lets them know that you are on their side, remind them how much you value them and reaffirm that you think well of them but not of their performance in this situation. Realize that once the reprimand is over, it’s over.
YOU WILL NEVER FORGET:
- People who feel good about themselves produce good results
- Productivity is more than just quantity or work done, it’s also the quality
- One minute goal setting, one minute parsing, one minute reprimanding
- Always be clear about what you’re doing and why you’re doing it
- Goals begin behaviors while consequences maintain behaviors
- Caring about people and results go hand in hand
- Catch people doing something right instead of something wrong
- Always act immediately
